New Testament scholarship has for years been dominated by form criticism with its assumption that the stories about Jesus circulated amongst and were shaped by the early Christian communities, detached from the eyewitnesses to the events themselves. In a major new work, Richard Bauckham questions this basic assumption and demonstrates that the gospels are essentially reliable eyewitness accounts. This summary of his case shows why it will change the shape of New Testament studies for years to come.
