A collection of short stories, which are obviously the outgrowth of her own experiences and those of her associates in war time Europe, — Spain of the Civil War, France of the occupation, the front in Finland, the Mannerheim Line, the air base, Corsica, the Tyrol, etc. The stories are more sparse in their emotional and human elements than her early work, more tuned to the agonies of unexpressed emotion which this war seems to produce. A Portrait of a Lady, — story of a woman journalist who uses her sex to get her story; Luigi's House, story of a Corsican vineyard hand who sacrificed everything to hold what he considered his own—these stand out as the best of the lot.
