In my novel Third Son’s a Charm, Lieutenant-Colonel Benedict Draven is the leader of a suicide troop. These younger sons of the peerage are charged with taking on impossible missions so England can defeat Napoleon. When the Survivor series opens, the war is over and the men are back home, but the more I wrote the stories of my heroes - Ewan, Neil, Rafe, and others - the more the story came back to Draven. How did he become the leader of the troop? How did he choose the men involved? And what did he have to give up? Or rather, who did he give up? In ‘The Kissing of the Shrew’, my prequel short story, readers get a peek at the origins of The Survivors and an introduction to the man who led it and the woman who changed his world.
