"The Kraken" first appeared in "Poems, Chiefly Lyrical" in 1830. The poem draws its images from the Norse legend of a gigantic sea-monster that supposedly preyed upon shipping off the coast of Norway (and was probably founded on the observation of an enormous cuttle-fish or squid), first described by Bishop Pontoppidan in "A History of Norway" (1752).
