The year is 1939, and the Second World War has broken out. After her father goes off to fight, young Katie is left living with her mother in a rundown pub on the outskirts of Crowford. Terrified that her father won't come back, Katie tries to hide from reality by venturing into the nearby forest. Katie soon discovers that something dangerous is lurking in the forest. Meanwhile, strange noises ring out in the pub at night, hinting at another mysterious presence. Katie and her mother both notice the noises, but they react in very different ways. And as the war continues, they each have to find ways of coping. But is another dark force hiding in the pub, waiting for its chance to strike?
