The Marriages is a novel by the American author Henry James, first published in 1891. The story revolves around the lives and relationships of several characters, primarily the Pembroke family. The patriarch, Mr. Pembroke, is a wealthy and influential man who has arranged marriages for his three daughters, each to a man of his choosing. The eldest daughter, Gertrude, is married to a wealthy banker named Mr. Brand; the middle daughter, Charlotte, is married to a French count named Mr. de Coucy; and the youngest daughter, Bessie, is engaged to a young American businessman named Mr. Vanderbank. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that each of these marriages is fraught with tension and unhappiness. Gertrude is unhappy in her loveless marriage and begins to have an affair with a young artist named Mr. Moreen. Charlotte is deeply in love with her husband but is constantly reminded of their class differences, which causes her great distress. Bessie, meanwhile, is torn between her loyalty to her family and her growing feelings for Mr. Vanderbank.Throughout the novel, James explores themes of love, marriage, class, and social convention. He also delves into the psychology of his characters, examining their innermost thoughts and motivations. The Marriages is a complex and nuanced work of fiction that offers a deep and insightful look into the human experience. When she knocked at his door late in the evening he was regularly not in his room. It was known in the house how much he was worried; he was horribly nervous about his ordeal. It was to begin on the 23rd of June, and his father was as worried as himself. The wedding had been arranged in relation to this....This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Henry James, OM (1843-1916), son of theologian Henry James Sr., brother of the philosopher and psychologist William James and diarist Alice James, was an American-born author, one of the founders and leaders of a school of realism in fiction. He spent much of his life in England and became a British subject shortly before his death. He is primarily known for a series of major novels in which he portrayed the encounter of America with Europe. His plots centered on personal relationships, the proper exercise of power in such relationships, and other moral questions. His method of writing from the point of view of a character within a tale allowed him to explore the phenomena of consciousness and perception, and his style in later works has been compared to impressionist painting. James insisted that writers in Great Britain and America should be allowed the greatest freedom possible in presenting their view of the world, as French authors were. His imaginative use of point of view, interior monologue and unreliable narrators in his own novels and tales brought a new depth and interest to realistic fiction, and foreshadowed the modernist work of the twentieth century. An extraordinarily productive writer, in addition to his voluminous works of fiction he published articles and books of travel writing, biography, autobiography, and criticism, and wrote plays, some of which were performed during his lifetime with moderate success. His theatrical work is thought to have profoundly influenced his later novels and tales.
