R.S. Summerhays' aim in this pocket edition has been to make a world-wide selection of the breeds of horses and ponies, giving concise information on the origin, development, appearance and general character of each breed. Wherever possible the official description issued by the appropriate breed society is stated. Familiar and unfamiliar breeds are included, such as the well-known Shire and Thoroughbred horses, the primitive Tarpan, once extinct, and the miniature Falabella, claimed to be the smallest horse in the world. An account of the horse-breeding countries of the world introduces the work. The book is copiously illustrated with black-and-white photographs and helpful end-paper diagrams of the horse; there is a glossary of technical terms and an index.
