As the tiny Grand Duchy of Carthia shudders in the bitter aftermath of the 1848 Revolutions, Princess Anna Theresa, daughter of the Grand Duke, narrowly escapes with her life when her parents are assassinated. She seeks refuge with her cousin Prince Franz Johann - but he refuses to acknowledge that the ragged waif before him is indeed the Princess. Insisting that the real Anna lies in her coffin he forces her to marry his mysterious prisoner Prince Stephan. How can Anna convince her new husband that she is really the Princess - especially when he is a revolutionary leader and she is an enemy of his people?
