The Black Spores

2014

Mankind is no longer at the top of the food chain. The Sixth Extinction: America – Part One: The Black Spores is set in America. Now for the first time we jump from England to the United States and see how the Americans are dealing with the end of the world. The Sixth Extinction is an apocalyptic tale about a pandemic that sweeps the globe, decimating the human race, leaving humanity struggling to survive. Within three weeks, everything has changed. Social structure has collapsed as the government locks itself away with a select portion of its vast army in deep bunkers, leaving the civilians to their own fate and the infected that stalks the streets. The Story follows a group of fourteen strangers, who lived in an apartment building in the Fordham Heights area of New York City; they decide to band together, seeking shelter in a shipping container, on the back of a truck heading towards Pennsylvania and the promise of safety. There’s Alexander Frazier, a twenty-four-year-old, who, before the outbreak, worked in the mail department of a large law firm. The King Brothers, Lindell, who’s thirty-seven and used to be a bouncer for a nightclub, and his thirty-one-year-old little brother, who was once an amateur boxer. The fifty-one-year-old alcoholic Reverend Frank Clark, who harbours a dark secret, and is looking for redemption from a broken world. The second generation Mexican seventeen-year-old twins, Juan and Bonnie Sanchez. The twenty-six-year-old Cody Tanner who used to be a soil conservationist, and his twenty-five-year-old wife Abigail Tanner, who used to be a wine taster. The twenty-two-year-old all-American girl Jessica Scott, who used to be a waitress. The seventy-one-year-old Phyllis Washington, who isn’t even aware of what’s going on around her. The thirty-three-year-old Gothic lesbian, Naomi Ford who used to work as a chef, and has a dangerous addiction. The twenty-year-old Tierra Ouellette who used to be a stripper to pay the bills, and her three-year-old son Dante, who never stops crying. And finally, the driver of the truck, the forty-six-year-old Troy Cobb, who even ten years later is still trying to get over the death of his wife. Altogether, they are struggling to survive and come to terms with their new situation. However, they’re a large group of people now living in close proximity. Tempers flare, and emotions run high as one disastrous situating leads to another. There is also Doctor Nathan Bachman, a scientist working in Groom Lake, in the secret base often referred to as Area 51. However, it doesn’t contain UFOs and little green men; its sole purpose is much more disturbing. It contains one of the seven pods – living artefact that our ancient forefathers buried beneath vast structures of stone, to save the world from their deadly, infectious black spores. When the base is compromised Bachman is airlifted to the secret Quirauk Mountain, Pennsylvania bunker. There an even more disturbing secret comes to light that makes everything before it pale in comparison.

Mankind is no longer at the top of the food chain. The Sixth Extinction is an apocalyptic tale about a pandemic that sweeps the globe, decimating the human race, leaving humanity struggling to survive. Within three weeks, everything has changed. Social structure has collapsed as the government locks itself away with a select portion of its vast army in deep bunkers, leaving the civilians to their own fate and the infected that stalk the streets. The fourteen riding inside a shipping container, on the back of a truck, unwittingly find themselves trapped inside a military run town, just outside New York City. At first, everything seemed better – they were somewhere secure, with food and a place to sleep, protected by their country’s army. Then things take a deadly turn as they witness people who are beaten and chained like animals. The group of military personnel have gone AWOL and have decided to create their own version of the future. They have to find a way out. But how, they are surrounded, and they have no weapons? Doctor Nathan Bachman was moved from one secret military bunker to another as the pod at Groom Lake was believed too dangerous, and a Presidential mandate determined its destruction along with all the others. However, the world was led to believe all the pods have been destroyed, until Bachman learns there’s one still alive in the facility hidden below his very feet, and unbelievably it’s reproducing!

The fourteen find themselves prisoners inside a makeshift town on the outskirts of New York City. Captain Stitt has created a renegade – AWOL – army, carving out a small ‘utopia’ for himself and his men. Lindell and Terrance rushed back to see what is happening to the group once they notice men chained and being loaded on a truck. Frank and Juan have been marched away at gunpoint, and two soldiers remain with the females – one is attacking Jessica, while the other is about to toss Dante out of a window. Alex and Troy escape from the hospital and find the truck. Troy stays with the vehicle while Alex goes to get the others. But first he needs to create a diversion. Doctor Nathan Bachman has been informed that all the pods weren’t destroyed. One is in the same bunker, deep below his feet, and he’s also been informed it’s reproducing. What he finds completely changes everything he knows about the pods. He dons a hazmat suit and enters the chamber where the pod is located. He is shocked with what he finds, just moments before he is knocked unconscious. Does Alex find the others before the town is overrun with the infected? Can Lindell and Terrance help Jessica and Dante in time? Will Doctor Bachman survive his meeting with the only remaining, original, pod? Mankind has underestimated the pods, and now we will pay the price for thinking we are the only sentient species on the planet.

Social structure has collapsed as the government locks itself away with a select portion of its vast army in deep bunkers, leaving the civilians to their own fate and the infected that stalk the streets. Lindell and Terrance drive their newly acquired jeep with the powerful .50 cal machinegun. While in the truck, Jessica’s life hangs in the balance as they try to decide what to do about the length of pipe that is pierced through her thigh. They just hope that when she wakes up, the shock doesn’t kill her. “However, it’s not Jessica who dies first, someone else in the container asks for the priest’s blessing before taking their own life to the shock of everyone watching. Also, the group doesn’t realize that Capitan Stitt is alive and close on their trail with a small group of surviving men. Stitt only has one thing on his mind – revenge. He will not rest until they are all dead. Meanwhile, Doctor Bachman is trying to make his way through the bunker in the bulky hazmat suit, trying to reach the surface before his air supply runs out. He realizes he isn’t alone, there are others still alive inside the bunker, and what he learns from them – about what they have witnessed – completely changes the way he sees the pods yet again, and what they represent, and ultimately how that will affect mankind – the pods are gathering an army and are heading for the surface.

Alex, Troy, Frank, Naomi, and the two King brothers find themselves once again running for their lives. They have joined forces with a group led by a woman called Smokie – it’s a collection of women and a few men who have survived on a river in an old fishing boat, and living on an island. However, the island they presumed to be safe was overrun and they have to race along a two-mile stretch of a road full of infected to a cargo ship. They find themselves fighting for their lives on a beach, with the crashing, ice cold waves at their backs, and creatures charging from the woods ahead. Their only hope is a rigid-sided boat that will ferry them a small group at a time to the large vessel. That’s if they have the strength to fight the endless wave of infected until the small boat returns for the second group. Meanwhile, Doctor Bachman and Emma are also running for their lives from a large deformed animal that is tossing other creatures aside as if they weigh nothing. They frantically stumble into a barn full of infected cattle. Have they just raced headlong into a situation even deadlier than the one they were trying to escape from? They also discover they are not the only humans left alive in the bunker, and does this stranger hold the answers to some of their questions? Does he offer hope? Meanwhile, the creatures are amassed in the warehouse behind the largest pod, with the black spores undulating across the ceiling, all eager to head out into the world of man and let loose new strains of the infection. Will they be stopped in time, or is this truly the end of mankind – will the sixth extinction run its deadly course and wipe mankind and every other species off the face of the planet?

Social structure has collapsed as the government locks itself away with a select portion of its vast army in deep bunkers, leaving the civilians to their own fate and the infected that stalk the streets. Can it get any worse for Smokie and her group? What the survivor’s first thought was a floating haven has turned out to be anything but. First, they are rammed by a ship and then attacked by another, and just when they manage to escape it turns out there has been an infected man onboard the whole time, and he’s kidnapped Naomi. Not to mention a new strain of the virus which has mutated the birds into a new delivery system, with horrific results – a new strain of creatures is born, but unlike their previous, mindless cousins, this new strain is intelligent. When the King brothers with Alex and Mollee finally assume they have the stranger cornered; things go from bad to catastrophic in the blink of an eye. If they thought they had problems before, it all pales in comparison with their latest encounter. At the same time as Troy is having a revelation, it looks like Frank might be having a breakdown, or is he simply coming to terms with the undeniable truth? Meanwhile, below ground, hundreds of miles away, Bachman and the others are still running for their lives. The bulk of the creatures have been destroyed, but there is still enough of them around to cause no end of problems. They need to reach the weapon’s zone if they have any hope of surviving. Also, Stu and Soozie’s fate goes from bad to worse when they unwittingly find survivors from the shipwrecked coastguard cutter. They now find themselves hostages to a madman. And what is lurking in the belly of the cargo ship? Something that will not only spell doom for those onboard, but it may also be the final straw for the entire human race.
