It is the last of the three stories starring Detective Auguste Dupin. The plot as such is that a letter has been lost that may harm its owner, to whom it was addressed, if it falls into the wrong hands, then the prefect of the Parisian police, seeing that he cannot solve the mystery, decides to ask Dupin for help since it is known who has it but not where the audacious thief has hidden it. With this story, Poe confirmed his mastery at creating intrigues and mysteries, away from his usual Gothic style, and anticipating what would eventually become the criminal and detective genre that we all know.
