In this, the second book in The Trader saga from Cherokee Parks, Thomas Samuel “Tree” Bell and his French/Ojibwe woman welcome children into their lives at a time not long after the Shoshoni, Oglala and Cheyenne confront the Crow in their winter village in an attempt to bring a lasting peace to the region. As a tentative peace is established, things return to near normal among the Shoshoni people. While on a woodcutting and hunting expedition, Tree is mauled by a huge grizzly he and Washakie were tracking, upsetting many of his plans as he recovers. As the Shoshoni trading fair approaches, trappers arrive to trade with them, bringing a harbinger of things to come for The Trader. As the first rendezvous is held the following year, Tree realizes that if he is to continue trading, it will have to be elsewhere as trappers begin to flood the Rockies. His knowledge of how the Europeans forced the Tsalagi and others from their homelands confirms his decision to move to a new area. Accompanied by close friends looking to live in new places, they travel to new lands, each leaving the traveling party as they find places where a new life awaits.
