Return to the gothic underbelly of the Victorian age in the company of Mr. Sherlock Holmes and Dr John H Watson. Holmes was often reluctant to allow Watson to chronicle publically some of his most sensitive cases. In such circumstances, Dr Watson’s first literary editor was occasionally permitted to publish the events as fictions with all mention of Holmes involvement removed. Within are four recently unearthed cases that reveal the secret sorrows behind some of those tales. Dr Watson relates all four adventures in the finest tradition and spirit of such classics as ‘The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire’ and ‘The Adventure of the Creeping Man.’ THE ADVENTURE OF THE MOST DANGEROUS MAN August 1882. Lottie Underwood calls upon Sherlock Holmes asking for his help with the unwanted attentions of a strange Swede named Dr Octavius Gaster. Holmes is too busy to help, but when Miss Underwood’s fiancée suffers a fatal heart attack, Holmes realizes that foul play is involved. The plot thickens when Miss Underwood vanishes, seemingly under her own will. Can Holmes determine what happened to her fiancée and track her down? THE ADVENTURE OF THE HAUNTED GRANGE November 1883. Mr. Silas D’Odd calls upon Sherlock Holmes with a peculiar tale of his attempts to procure a ghost for his medieval manor. When the ghost-summoner absconds with the eccentric man’s plate, Mr. D’Odd wonders who is responsible. Holmes agrees to track down the thief, but will he instead discover that Goresthorpe Grange is now the home to a spectre or two? THE ADVENTURE OF THE FABRICATED VISION January 1887. An accountant named Henry Darnley – hard at work upon reviewing ledgers that might contain evidence of political corruption – has collapsed from an attack of brain-fever, raving of visions from the past. His employer begs Sherlock Holmes to learn if Darnley’s work can be trusted, or has the man gone mad? Will Holmes and Watson reveal a spiritual link to an ancient crime, or is there a more nefarious explanation for Darnley’s visions? THE ADVENTURE OF THE WRONG HAND October 1895. Sir Dominick Holden, the famous retired Indian surgeon, has been plagued by the revenant of his long-dead patient – who longs for the return of his amputated hand. Sherlock Holmes believes that the tales are nonsense, until he learns that all who stay in Sir Dominick’s home have also seen the ghost – including Dr Watson. Holmes may be a master of deductive reasoning, but how will such skills help him banish the ghost from England’s shores forever?Fully annotated, this edition contains a cornucopia of scholarly insights that compare these newly unearthed tales by Dr John H. Watson to the classic adventures from the Canon of Sherlock Holmes.
