Strindberg var endast 37 år gammal när han fann tiden mogen att upprätta ett bokslut över sitt liv. De två första delarna av Tjänstekvinnans son skrevs på våren och försommaren 1886 och skildrar tiden från den första barndomen fram till år 1872, när han slutgiltigt övergav universitetsstudierna i Uppsala för att återvända till Stockholm "och bli litteratör, samt möjligen författare, om hans kallelse befanns vara grundad". De två avslutande delarna skrev Strindberg i Schweiz 1886. I del 3 skildrar Strindberg sina växlingsrika ungdomsår 1872-75 och i sista delen dokumenteras den idéutveckling som avtecknar sig i den överväldigande rika produktionen från genombrottet med Röda rummet 1879 till bokslutet med Tjänstekvinnans son.
