Jess leaves the town of Bradford and is on the hunt for the killer, Keith Ellis. Before he takes Ellis’s body to the town marshal in Raleigh, Texas, he gets information that Ben Hannon, a second wanted killer, has been seen hanging around the town of Murphy, which is on the way to Raleigh. He heads to Murphy and finds Hannon staying in an old shack just outside town. He kills Hannon and takes both bodies to Raleigh to turn in for the bounty. When he reaches Raleigh, Rudy Vance, a top gunslinger, shows up. He's been looking to challenge Jess for a long time and he wants to make a real spectacle of the gunfight. He sends out a wire, letting everybody know when and where it's going to be. Jess decides not to waste his time and wait for the gunfight to happen. Instead, he goes after another wanted man named Toby Massey, heading to Torrington to hunt him down. After finding Massey and bringing his body back to Raleigh, the gunfight between Jess and Ruby Vance takes place. Then, Jess gets a message from United States Marshal Frank Reedy, ordering him to go after the Gleason gang who have committed their third bank robbery, killing two people in the process. Bodine travels to Raleigh to join Jess on the hunt. After they catch the first of the gang, the huge timber wolf, Shadow, mysteriously shows up again.
