Sheriff Ben Josephs had been elected only a few months ago. He had started out as a soldier. After the war he became a deputy and had been for years. He planned to run for sheriff, but the last sheriff had gotten wind of it and let him go. However, most of the people in the county liked him. So, when he put himself on the ballot, he won by a landslide. Ben brought law and order to the county, and the outlaws didn't like it. The bootleggers were getting run out, and they had begun to fight back. The two he had just shot were more than bootleggers. The outlaws in this county were into more than making shine. They were organized gangs. Their leader, Pat Hughes, was now pushing up daisies because he had brutally attacked an armed citizen. He was so full of himself that he never considered someone would fight back. Now the gangsters fought each other for control.
