Vampire Detective Midnight

2019

Alternate cover edition of ASIN B07TJ2T9DG Nick frowned, staring around at the alley floor. It hit him again. There was something wrong with this blood. It smelled too good. It smelled way, way too good… Vampire with a past and homicide detective, Naoko “Nick” Tanaka just got transferred to the NYPD, where he works as a “Midnight,” or vampire in the employ of the human police. Like all state-reg’d vamps, he gets his food delivered to his door, lives in government housing, and basically can’t sneeze without the U.S. government knowing about it. More than anything, he just wants to be left alone, to endure his immortality in peace, but he’s barely in New York two weeks when things start to go sideways. It all starts with his new case––a case involving dead hybrids, graffiti that tells the future, a kid who shouldn’t exist at all, and a possible conspiracy involving the richest humans in New York. That doesn’t even get into the school principal, a woman with secrets of her own, who has a deeply unsettling effect on him. Nick finds he can’t get personally uninvolved with any of it. Instead, he gets sucked in even deeper, until he’s pretty sure he’ll end up forcibly reprogrammed by his human owners––assuming they don’t just rip his heart out of his chest and be done with it. VAMPIRE DETECTIVE MIDNIGHT is book #1 of a gritty, romantic new series set in a futuristic, dystopian New York populated by vampires, humans and psychics trying to rebuild their world after a devastating race war nearly obliterates the previous one. A spinoff of the Quentin Black Mystery series, it features vampire with a past and homicide detective, Naoko “Nick” Tanaka, who gets transferred to the NYPD after a bad incident in Los Angeles forces him to start a new life. Nick works as a “Midnight,” or vampire in the employ of the human police department, but when he arrives in New York, he really just wants to be left alone to work, surf, and deal with his immortality in peace. Life, and the residents of New York, clearly have other ideas.

Eyes of Ice

2019

“Hey… you.” The man looked him over again. “You fight? Right?” His lips thinned, his eyes on Nick’s chest and arms. “…You look like you do. Frankly, you’re the first vampire I’ve seen in here who’s worth the cost of admission.” At Nick’s blank stare, the man shrugged. “A hundred thousand to fight. Twice that, if you win.” Nick gets pulled into the world of underground boxing, first to support a friend, and then to help one of the homicide detectives in his precinct solve a case. Things get personal, fast, when Nick gets drawn into the game himself, and into the sights of the killers, who appear to be targeting vampires, first draining them for blood and venom before extracting their hearts and tossing them outside the dome. Nick is technically still suspended, but that doesn’t keep him out of the crosshairs with some of the biggest names in the criminal underground that runs New York Protected Area. Nor does it reassure his new girlfriend, who by now is convinced he has a death wish, or at the very least will do just about anything to avoid talking to her about what’s going on between the two of them.

The Prescient

2019

A bomb detonates in a landmark building in downtown New York, killing one of the richest and most controversial men in the city. Nick has no real leads apart from the dead man himself, and the dead man’s partner, the city’s star designer and architect, an eccentric vampire named Straven. When Straven takes a personal interest in Nick, one that seems to go beyond his status as a Midnight, or his newfound fame on the underground boxing circuit, the NYPD encourages Nick to play along for the sake of the case. Nick gets drawn into a world of extravagant parties with some of the biggest power brokers among the city’s elite, learning more about the complex relationship between humans and vampires than he ever wanted to know. In the process, what starts off as a simple case of a robbery gone bad, soon begins to look like something a lot worse… and with much more far-reaching consequences. It also brings Nick far too close to the life he thought he’d left behind, as a lieutenant in the White Death, the vampire criminal underground.

Someone wants all the vampires dead. They may have found the perfect weapon. Weirdest crime scene ever? Check. Guy eaten by a sentient wall? Check. Every shady government agency in existence playing coverup? Check. But is it murder? Nick Tanaka, vampire homicide detective for the NYPD, stumbles into a political minefield when their new Midnight, a rookie vampire cop straight out of the police academy, shows up dead inside a high security vault. Morley, Nick’s boss, wants answers, but no one wants the NYPD on the case. As a favor to Morley, Nick agrees to help, going to his contacts in the military-industrial complex to try and find answers. Instead, he uncovers a conspiracy led by a murderous fanatic and his band of “blood-purity” crazies, who appear to want nothing less than all-out race war. Worse, his hybrid girlfriend, Wynter James, is now in their crosshairs, too. Book #4 of the Vampire Detective Midnight series. The White Death

2021

Nick will do anything to keep his mate safe. Anything. Even if it means selling his soul to his vampire sire, and rejoining the dark underground of vampires known as the White Death. Dimitry Yi, infamous anti-vampire extremist, has been missing for weeks. His rabid followers are losing their minds. Dead bodies start appearing around the city, marked with the symbol of Dimitry Yi. Riots break out in vampire neighborhoods, even as bombs go off at government buildings and cafes. New York grows increasingly violent and unstable, bringing pressure from many to just give the terrorists what they want. The message is clear: give them their leader back, or the killings will continue. Worse, now they appear to be targeting Nick, maybe because he’s famous as a cage-fighting vampire, but more likely from his role as a Midnight, a vampire homicide detective for the NYPD. Someone knows about Nick’s involvement in Dimitry Yi’s disappearance, and they will do anything to get him to release Yi – including targeting Nick’s girlfriend, an obvious “race-traitor” and blood whore to a vampire. In the end, Nick decides he must look to his own kind for help. Even if that means indebting himself to his sire, Brick, a human-hating vampire with a twisted agenda of his own.

They say you can never go home again. In Nick’s case, he can’t seem to escape it. San Francisco seems determined to suck him back in, whether he wants it or not. But it’s only a few days. He can do a few days without dying, right? A high-profile cage match brings Nick back to his hometown, to fight for Farlucci’s vampire fight club. After years of avoiding going back, avoiding the crushing memories that live on those twisty streets, Nick returns now as a champion fighter and a celebrity. He can’t go anywhere without being recognized, and mobbed by excited fans. While signing autographs, Nick is accosted by a strange vampire who swears he knows him, who has memories of Nick that make absolutely no sense. When Nick tries to investigate, things only get weirder, until Nick falls down a rabbit hole of missing memories and long-ago wars, friends and family long dead. Before Nick can sort it out, his other boss, the one who works for the NYPD, wants Nick to stay in San Francisco, to help them solve a murder case back in Manhattan. But what should have been a routine investigation quickly merges with Nick’s past until both things feel connected. But someone doesn't want that past unearthed, or the mysteries solved. After an attempt on Nick's life, Wynter shows up, and pretty soon they're targeting her, too.

Midnight Coven

2022

Home ended up being a lot further away than Nick thought. Yet, for the first time in two hundred years, Nick can contemplate going back. No way is he going alone. He has a new family here, in this version of New York, and he’s not going anywhere without at least some of them. He’s especially not going anywhere without his mate, Wynter James, and the two orphan seers he more or less adopted. The problem is, the defense contractor, Archangel, owns those seers, and increasingly owns his mate. He knows their CEO wants to own him, too, so he can’t let Archangel know what he’s up to, or they’ll definitely try to stop them. He can’t tell his vampire sire, Brick, either, for more or less the exact same reasons. Meanwhile, he’s still working as a Midnight for the NYPD, who actually do own him. They just assigned him to a big case in the province where his girlfriend lives. All Nick wants is time to think about his options, think about this inter-dimensional madness, and get some much-needed time alone with his mate. But he just found out his girlfriend might be under investigation for racial crimes on top of everything else, which means it’s only a matter of time before their illegal relationship gets uncovered. Nick can’t help but think Archangel is behind that, too. He also can’t help but see it as a threat. NOTE: this is a preliminary book description, the final version is coming soon!
