The Masquerade – Dust to Dust

2011

Paths of Storytelling

Vampire the Masquerade

2011

This was White Wolf's April Fool's Joke for 2011. A note from Eddy Webb, World of Darkness Developer: Sometimes my job at White Wolf requires me to dig around in our archives. Mostly I'm looking for a long-lost CD with a particular piece of art or the layout files for an old book, but once in a while I stumble across old contracts, ad copy, and submissions. A few weeks ago, I ran into this manuscript, in a folder labeled "Paths of Storytelling" and a hand-written note that said "No. Absolutely not. -SW." It looks like something we worked on right around the time of Vampire: The Masquerade Revised. The cover sheet appears to be missing, so I don't know who originally submitted it, or even if it was done by one writer. Since it's the 20th anniversary of Vampire: The Masquerade, I thought it might be cool to share this strange piece of missing history. I scanned it as best as I could, and we used some old assets from our fiction archive to make a pretty digital version. Enjoy this glimpse into what might have been.

Vampire

1994

"What yer holdin' in yer sticky little fingers represents one of my most exquisite pleasures. If there's anything I love, it's drawing dark portraits of whatever I want, spilling my brain on a page. The only condition: "They're vampires." Ever since I saw Katheryn Bigelow's film Near Dark (one of only two or three in the theater... five times), I've wanted to illustrate the work from Vampire: The Masquerade and what you see before you. White Wolf Game Studio gave me the chance to do it. I don't know if I or they expected the tremendous response that we received from all of you who are hip to the alternative, sensual, modern primitive, tattooed, gypsy white-trash aspects of the images created here, but we're thankful you did respond. A lot of influences played a part in this work: sex (I love to do the erotic ones), love, pain, frustration, strength, and of course the CD Vulgar Display of Power writhing in the background." This is a collection of artwork by Tim Bradstreet for Vampire: The Masquerade. It showcases ten full-page black-and-white portraits of different vampire characters that will be familiar to owners of other books. These are printed on individual card sheets, stored within a folded envelope that includes a biography of the artist.

Hi, I'm Jess, and I read stories. I grew up LOVING fairy tales, folklore, mythology - especially creation stories. I still do, but my tastes have grown over the years, and now I read just about anything I can get my hands on. As well, I used to write stories (professionally). I've helped create dozens of roleplaying games and products, ranging from the World of Darkness to the RPGs for the Supernatural TV show, and the Dresden Files book series. I also write fiction, both novel-length and short stories. My first solo anthology, Monsters I Have Known, is available on Amazon and other retailers through Mad Muse Studio.
