La Vita di Henry Brulard è il racconto autobiografico di un’infanzia e di un’adolescenza ardenti e chiuse in se stesse, in mezzo a un ambiente ostile, che termina bruscamente in un’aura di felicità e di liberazione con l’arrivo di Stendhal a Milano, nel giugno del 1800, al seguito dell’esercito napoleonico. Per il suo autore, queste memorie erano «come le Confessioni di Rousseau, ma scritte in altro stile e con maggiore franchezza». Per molti dei suoi lettori, è, fra i libri di Stendhal, il prediletto.

Known for his acute analysis of his characters' psychology, he is considered one of the earliest and foremost practitioners of realism in his two novels Le Rouge et le Noir (The Red and the Black, 1830) and La Chartreuse de Parme (The Charterhouse of Parma, 1839).
