Why Don’t You Just Die? is a psychological thriller in which yokai do not appear, and a completely new kind of novel. It was published simultaneously as a book and as an iPad application. In the first five days of its release on the App Store, it was purchased more than 10,000 times, making it an instant bestseller. Now with a complete translation, it is the world’s first English-Japanese bilingual ebook. In this new novel by Natsuhiko Kyogoku, a young man named Kenya comes looking for information on Asami, a young woman he casually acquainted shortly before her death, as he visits six different people who knew her: her boss, her next-door neighbor, her yakuza boyfriend, her estranged mother, the detective assigned to her case, and a lawyer. In each chapter, the person tells Kenya how wretched his or her life is, rather than what kind of person Asami was; to which Kenya quips: “Why don’t you die, then?” It turns out that Asami was the only one content with her circumstances despite her hard-luck life. The story is told mostly through conversations between nonchalant Kenya and the person he visits. Through their interactions, we find out about Asami’s miserable upbringing and how badly she had been treated by everyone around her. In spite of her misfortune, though, Asami remained optimistic until the last moment, when the killer is revealed.
