Zack Wood, Harrison and Marshall Pascoe were cousins and got into all kinds of trouble. All of it wasn’t their fault, but enough was. May 23rd, 1889, being a late spring day and very hot, they sneaked off and went down to the Mora River to go swimming. They had been told dozens of times not to go off anywhere without telling a grownup first. Marshall was the oldest being twelve, Harrison and Zack were nine and wouldn’t you know Harrison had a little six year old sister, Katherine Rose. She was tiny and dad gum sure cute, as well as being spoilt rotten. When she could, she stayed pretty close to her brother. Looking at Harrison, Marshall nodded his head toward Kate. Harrison bribed her not to tell their mother they were going to the river for a swim. Kate told them they would get into trouble, real trouble. The boys assured her they would be home before their father got back from town. They headed for the river in a run, screaming and talking. They peeled out of their clothes and hit that nice cool water. They had just gotten out of the swimming hole when two armed men showed up, kidnappers for a mining company is what they were. The mines worked kids, with no pay. They gave them water and food with a tent to sleep in, that’s all. They now had over two dozen young boys working twelve hours a day. As they grabbed Zack and Harrison, one of them threw a wild shot at Marshall, who grabbed his chest and fell backward into the river. The outlaws loaded Harrison and Zack on horses and rode off. Marshall couldn’t follow those kidnappers very far on foot, so he walked into the next small town and stole himself a horse. The cowboy ran out of the livery hollering. “You’ll hang boy! I’ll see you hang!” “I’ll bring him back Mister, honest.”
