این کتاب سومین جلد از مجموعهٔ جهان اسطوره‌شناسی است که در یازده جلد به وسیلهٔ نشرمرکز منتشر شده و ترجمهٔ برخی از مهم‌ترین و روشنگرترین نوشته‌های مربوط به اسطوره، از صاحب‌نظران معتبر این رشته، در آن گرد آورده شده‌اند. گوناگونی قلمروهای ظهور و نمود اسطوره، از زن و عشق و مرگ و کیش، آیین تا رمان و فیلم باعث تنوع و گستردگی این‌گونه پژوهش‌ها شده و به دانش اسطوره‌شناسی وسعتی چشم‌گیر بخشیده است. در این مجموعه کوشش شده به همهٔ این جنبه‌ها توجه شود تا تحلیل‌ها و تحقیقات علمی و نظری متقن سد راه رواج ساده‌نگری و تعمیم‌ها و برداشت‌های شتاب‌زده و سطحی در زمینهٔ اسطوره‌شناسی شوند.
