German politician for The Left party. In the German Democratic Republic he was active as an lawyer and belonged to the reformist camp of the state party SED. After the fall of the GDR he became a prominent member of SED's succesor party PDS which later became The Left. Since 2016 he is the chairman of the Party of the European Left.
