La historia se ambienta en 1868, y relata episodios que transcurren después de lo narrado en Le due tigri y antes de Alla conquista di un impero. Se sitúa, pues, en un momento decisivo en la vida de Sandokán y sus compañeros: cuando el poderío colonial inglés se expande y los piratas malayos comprenden que el suyo es un mundo que se desvanece sin remedio. Llena de acción, El Rey del Mar tiene un argumento afortunado. El portugués Yáñez acude en socorro de Tremal-Naik, cuya plantación es atacada por los rebeldes dayaks. Tremal-Naik y su hija Darma son capturados por sir James Moreland, un anglo-indio al servicio del rajá de Sarawak. Por suerte, Yáñez es salvado por un americano que le vende la poderosa nave de guerra que da su nombre a la novela.

Ora che Yanez è diventato il ricco Maharajah del'Assam restituisce a Sandokan l'aiuto ricevuto e si pone al suo fianco per fargli riconquistare il regno che una volta era stato dei suoi avi, un sultanato nel Borneo che gli era stato vilmente usurpato da un Inglese. Avventure a gogo nelle fitte foreste del Borneo, contro tribù di tagliatori di teste, alle prese con gli intrighi orditi dal greco Teotokris, già Primo Ministro dell'Assam sotto il precedente rajah, che è riuscito a cavarsela e a giungere al Borneo col preciso intento di vendicarsi contro coloro che hanno posto fine al suo potere in Assam… Chi avrà la meglio? Yanez de Gomera s'è introdotto sotto le mentite spoglie di un generale prussiano a corte dal sultano Abdullah ed è riuscito a prendere le redini della guarnigione di stanza a Mompracem, con l'obiettivo di smilitarizzare la fascia costiera dove è più facile l'attracco delle navi. Kammamuri l'ha seguito come suo schiavo per liberare Jamilah, catturata da Brooke alla Città di Pietra. Ma Teotokris, tornato a corte, smaschera entrambi

Dopo aver sgominato le truppe di Sindhia e aver ricollocato sul trono dell'Assam la legittima regina Surama, come raccontato in Alla conquista di un impero, Yanez de Gomera, il portoghese amico inseparabile di Sandokan, potrebbe godersi finalmente la pace dedicandosi al figlioletto Soarez, nato dall'unione con la bella Surama, e alla caccia al bufalo. Senonché la tranquillità appena raggiunta viene spezzata dalle morti consecutive per avvelenamento di tre ministri di corte. Le indagini portano all'imprigionamento di un misterioso bramino dotato di poteri ipnotici talmente forti da riuscire a coartare, dal carcere, la volontà di Surama spingendola addirittura a dar fuoco al palazzo reale. Ben presto, dietro le oscure e incontrollabili macchinazioni del bramino si profila l'ombra dell'ex usurpatore Sindhia, vera eminenza grigia del romanzo. Toccherà ancora una volta a Yanez muovere con un pugno di uomini verso la pagoda di Kalikò: forse lì si nasconde l'origine di tutte queste disavventure?

Il regno di Surama nell'Assam è minacciato dalle oscure e imprevedibili trame di un bramino, dotato di poteri sovrannaturali, al servizio dell'usurpatore Sindhia. Yanez, consorte di Surama, sferra il suo attacco alla pagoda di Kalikò, quartier generale delle truppe avversarie; ma la battaglia volge al peggio. Il nostro eroe è allora costretto a battere in ritirata verso l'unico rifugio che gli resta: la reggia di Gauhati, che raggiungerà attraversando un paese in rivolta. Per nulla rassegnato a veder crollare il proprio pacifico impero, Yanez organizza la resistenza e contemporaneamente affida al fedele Kammamuri la rischiosissima impresa di attraversare tra mille insidie le linee nemiche per chiedere rinforzi a Sandokan. Ma i rivoltosi aizzati da Sindhia espugnano anche la reggia di Gauhati e il coraggioso portoghese sta per arrendersi quando all'ultimo istante si ode il crepitio familiare delle armi dei tigrotti della Malesia: forse è prossima la rivincita di Yanez.
