Professor Schrieke concentrated a large part of his research during the last years of his life on a series of detailed studies emphasizing the continuity in Javanese social and cultural history. This volume contains a translation of the manuscript as it was left behind on his death, plus two closely related shorter studies: "Disruption and Continuity in Javanese Historiography" (posthumously published in 1950) and "The End of Classical Hindu-Javanese Culture in Central Java" (1941).
