This collection of Rumanian folk-tales - tough and rumbunctious, full of humour and resource - is a book to content child and scholar, teacher and parent. Pacala and Tandala are two typical folk-tale rogues, with that peasant mixture of simplicity and wiliness that is common to the traditional tales of so many nations, and which so delights children. But there are not only rogues here: there are wise old men, capable girls, and even a giant or two. Jean Ure has included in this very satisfying book some general information about Rumania, and the folk-tale tradition there which survives to the present day.
